Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is a type of breast change that is sometimes seen when a breast biopsy is done. In LCIS, cells that look like cancer cells are growing in the lining of the milk-producing glands of the breast (called the lobules), but they don’t invade through the wall of the lobules. LCIS is not considered to be cancer, and it typically does not spread beyond the lobule (become invasive breast cancer) if it isn’t treated.
Over 90% of the tumor must be morphologically lobular to be classified as such. Lobular carcinoma starts in the groups of glands that make milk (called lobules). It may be non-invasive (called lobular carcinoma in situ) or invasive. Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) LCIS is a buildup of abnormal cells in the lobules.
